Teaching Methodology - Policy & Strategic Planning

The Ghana Education Service operates a Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (fCUBE) programme, which has only recently recognised the need for a robust English literacy initiative at the pre-primary level. In 2007, an Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programme was incorporated into the fCUBE, as the first step in the Ghana Education Service's Early Childhood Development Plan.

Before 2007, kindergarten children were not gaining the necessary foundation of literacy and numeracy until they began primary school, and so their education development suffered. In the experience of the Sabre Trust, after 3 years in nursery, Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2, the majority of Ghanaian children enter Primary 1 illiterate, both in their own language and English. However, the primary school curriculum expects the children to hit the ground running with Primary 1 texts books all in English!

In August 2006, the Ghana Education Service, in collaboration with UNICEF, published a Kindergarten Curriculum covering years KG 1 and KG 2. This curriculum is based on learning through play and

activity based learning, teaching methods which the Sabre Trust wholly endorses for the kindergarten level. In order to better support the often untrained teachers delivering the kindergarten curriculum, the Sabre Trust is developing a teacher mentoring programme, using experienced volunteer teachers to support and mentor their Ghanaian counterparts as they get to grips with the new curriculum.
