Extra-Curricular Activity Support

The extra-curricular activities programme is designed to give children an extra incentive to go to school – attendance levels in Ghanaian schools fluctuate considerably and the Sabre Trust has found that simple measures such as offering exciting after-school activities or providing sports equipment for games sessions can dramatically affect the levels of attendance at school.

Regular events sponsored by the Sabre Trust include an annual school trip to the famous Kakum National Park, where the students learn about the plants and animals in the visitor centre, follow a nature trail to see the indigenous flora, fauna and animal species in their rain forest habitat, walk along the forest’s 300 metre high canopy walkway, and afterwards complete worksheets on the conservation issues they have learnt about.

Our aim is to expand this programme of visits to include other national sites of interest such as the Volta dam, the hydro-electric plant at Akosombo, Mount Adaklu and Kalakpe Reserve.
Additionally, in partnership with commercial entities in Ghana, we plan to develop a programme of visits to corporate offices in Accra to learn about the commercial opportunities and business enterprises that are thriving there.

Extra-curricular activities can take any number of forms, from Sports to Music, Arts & Craft to Drama, all of which offer children additional stimulus and an opportunity to showcase their non-academic talents. The extra-curricular activities programme is driven by the Sabre Trust’s ethical volunteering initiative – volunteers from around the world visit Ghana for anything from 2 weeks to 12 months and run afternoon workshops in activities where they have specific interests.
