Besease Community Football Strip

22 Apr 2009

The community of Besease has had a football team for many years now. Open to anyone who is interested, they train twice a week and play a match on a Sunday afternoon every fortnight. Having seen them in action they are a great side who play a quick, fluent passing game on poor pitches. Two of their players are in the regional football team which highlights the quality they have produced from such a small community.

Previous volunteers had informed SCT that the Besease team did not have their own strip and had to instead rent a kit from their arch rivals in nearby Kissi. This created a situation where some players lost motivation. Why play for a team who has no strip?

Steven Cole, a previous construction volunteer in Besease had a good relationship with the Besease team and trained with them regularly. He recognized the lack of training materials they had and also the absence of a strip. He left for Australia after Ghana to coach cricket, but he got in contact with his father Eric and highlighted the need in Besease. This contact resulted in the Cole family organizing the donation of many football kits all courtesy of the “great” Sandbatch United.

When the kits arrived on the bus run there was little time wasted before a strip was presented to the team and Coach Al-Hassan. The team absolutely loved the strip and quickly got down to work training with the new footballs. The Coach arranged a game for that weekend especially, just so that they could wear the kit. They were to play Komenda. It was a great match which Besease won 2-1 with an injury time goal - fairytale story. The team now take great pride in their strip and value it enormously. It is washed and pressed regularly before every game.

What the Cole family did for this project was amazing and the SCT would like to express their gratitude to all of them.

If anyone knows of any sports equipment that is being thrown out by schools or clubs then please find a way to donate it. It will have a huge impact on small communities here and brings a sense of community pride that will only help in the development of the community.
