Benefits of Volunteers
13 Oct 2007
Nursery 2 benefited this year from having 2 volunteers. The volunteers introduced fun into learning for the first time, though a year of practically no teacher meant it was an uphill struggle for both volunteers. The volunteers teamed up with Vida, a dynamic teacher from Nursery and successfully introduced a good behaviour system. The constructive and fun environment was maintained until the end of the academic year and thanks to both volunteers, Dorcas in KG1 found them much more focused and responsive at the start of term than previous classes.
Every volunteer formed an attachment with a different child and some of these relationships have had long lasting effects on the child’s progress. One volunteer singled out a rebellious student who was 8 yrs old but was in Nursery 2. She gave the student extra support and got her moved up to KG2 with her own age group. The student is now doing well in P1 of Primary School and has an excellent attitude to school. Sometimes it’s possible to have an impact on just one individual but that effect can be profound.
A group of volunteers painted, with the help of some eager young children, a spectacular mural on the side of the Nursery building. The Mural is a sea scene and covers the entire wall. It comes complete with handprints along the rocks around the wall, though I’m not sure they were supposed to be a part of the mural and they look too small to be a volunteers… !
