The week so far in Egyeikrom
As work progresses at Egyei Krom, the weather improves! The end classroom that was almost finished just before lunchtime yesterday, it was put into use immediately as lessons commenced in the afternoon. There are just a few touch ups needed for one of our projects to be completed!
Will and Kev took a trip into a lesson in the morning on Tuesday and came back with many differences and surprises they spotted while in there. They were surprised to see that pupils just turn up to class whenever they want and the teacher doesn’t mind, it’s another example of the laid back lifestyle we aren’t used to! For many getting used to “on time” and “Ghana time” and the difference between these two has been hard!
Alex and Jo S started work with some of the pupils in the library decorating the walls with murals and Ghanaian symbols, its working well as something for the pupils to get involved in and use their imagination, all involved are enjoying finding their artistic streak.
Mr Smith, Charlotte, Jo C and Emma took a trip to the local health centre and were shown round by one of two nurses who work 12 hour shifts to keep the centre open 24/7, they found out what is placed highest in importance and the improvements being made to malaria prevention and family planning. Mr Smith said that he found it very interesting and informative. The rest of the group that went enjoyed it immensely as well.
This morning the group enjoyed the religious assembly of the pupils in the school, who prayed and then sang with the help of clapping and drums, it was a lively experience that started the day off in a cheerful way.
With everyone now been given one of limited jobs to do (now that we are finishing all we can do) the team set to work this morning painting the computer room and finishing off odd jobs around the library. We are all looking forward to the beach trip this afternoon, when we will be taking a group of the Ghanaian pupils with us, which could be for some their first trip outside of the community.
We are all excited about the trip to Cape Coast and the beach on the weekend, where we will be visiting the Slave fort and doing some souvenir shopping (some members are looking forward to that bit more than others!)
